Feeds lawn and other landscape gardens, bushes and trees through spray, rotor or drip systems.

Dear Virid customers, employees and our community,

Virid Services was founded in 2009 by a small group committed to introducing commercial scale techniques of lawn and landscape plant feeding to the residential and small property owners as a simple, eco-friendly and low cost service.  We call it The H2grO System.  The H2grO automatically feeds lawns and landscape plants in a way that is most beneficial to the plant, not in a fashion that was convenient for the company using old techniques.  The H2grO feeds 70 times a growing season by automatically injecting small amounts of nutrients into sprinkler systems.  This frequent feeding of dilute nutrients has many benefits as described on this website.

The founders; Jon, Greg and I, are so excited about doing our part to get residential landscape care back on track.  Virid works with nature, not despite it.  We call the company Virid Services because Virid literally means green and we are committed to greening up one small corner of the world by getting back in sync with natural cycles.

But it goes beyond leapfrogging the quality of the service being offered today.  We have all worked for and with companies where what seemed to matter most was the salaries of top executives and maximizing the bottom line.  Perhaps we have become idealistic but we believe in a better way, one that promotes sustainability.

Sustainability, we believe, is broadly defined as "the capacity to endure."  More specifically we model our thoughts on sustainability on our main service's ability to economically deliver nutrients to plants in sync with how they like to grow so that they can then solve many of their own problems (like weeds, disease, thinning, thatch, fungus, etc).  The same techniques can be applied to sourcing components from suppliers locally and working with them to develop new and better products.  Or, working with employees to create dignified work where the better they do, the better the company does and, cycling back, the better they do.  Completing the cycle affords sustainability and we apply this mutually beneficial attitude to our relationships with our customers, their lawns, our suppliers, our employees, our investors and the community.  My wife, Robin has a mantra we use with our kids:  "You get what you give" that helps guide our daily actions and long term strategy.

I have worked in the construction, airline, software, consulting, data center, and telecom industries in engineering, financial, business development, mergers/acquisitions and corporate strategy functions.  I became frustrated with the motivations of corporate America and began looking for a more meaningful work-life.  After much searching I ran into Jon who introduced me to the Virid concept.  The premise was so simple and made such good sense that I researched it and found myself wanted the service for my own home.  “When you find an opportunity to join a company where you really want to tell all your friends about the service, you pick up that ball and run with it,” I told Robin as I sold her on the opportunity.

Jon designed the injection system for the Virid service.  After previously founding a company in this same industry he realized a couple of truths about the home lawn fertilization industry.  The main reasons automatic feeding of nutrients through sprinkler systems had not been adopted in the residential market is that;

  1. The price to have it installed was too high and
  2. The homeowner needs specific expertise to maintain the device.

It took his years in the industry to design a pump that is low cost, reliable and that delivers a highly predictable amount of fertilizer each time the pump works.  He then sought to provide this as a convenient service to homeowners without any installation cost.  “I am comfortable investing in the customer because this works so well I know they will keep coming back,” said Jon.  He takes a long term view of the customer and treats them with the respect he demands in his personal relationships.

Greg has been in the marketing and advertising industry for decades before coming on-board at Virid.  I remember when Greg was selling me on the merits of this unique solution.  He said that “Virid is a service with so many obvious benefits that he would enjoy selling this to the public and to all his friends.”  Greg quickly went to work on creating marketing and branding materials that fully captured the elegance of the Virid system.  Greg created the logo, with blades of grass formed into the shape of a “V” with a water drop coming into the middle.  He also helped to craft the image of “having the greenest lawn on the block.”

We are all excited by this service, its elegance and its many benefits for the homeowner.  Please let us know what you think of it.  Send us a photo of your lawn our your prize rose garden, veggie gardens, flowers, pumpkin patch, peonies, xeriscape gardens, etc.  We know the Virid system can help your lawn and landscape plants grow stronger and more drought resistant and we love seeing the results.

Thank you for looking into Virid.

Sincerely,

Peter Hutchinson
